Non-contact system for monitoring of health parameters for emergencies

Technology description
Non-contact patient monitoring system based on computer vision for monitoring of vital parameters during emergencies will be designed. The system will be built based on optical sensors for visible and/or infrared range (for monitoring parameters during night or situations with poor illumination). It will be able to provide monitoring parameters of breathing (respiratory rate, duration of inhale, duration of exhale), heart rate, and movements of the patient to notify medical staff about emergency. The features of the proposed system are: ability to monitor several patients using a single camera, automatic and semi-automatic definition of the region of interest in captured video, removal of artifacts in video.

Currently, non-contact systems for monitoring of vital parameters are only in research stage. Existing examples of non-contact systems are used in the laboratory and in the hospital. Development of a system for non-contact monitoring of vital parameters for emergency events is proposed. The main advantage of this system is the ability to monitor multiple vital signs of patients with a single camera. The system will be designed as cross-platform software.

Solved problems
The proposed project is intended for disaster medicine and military purposes and can be mounted on ambulance cars and in mobile hospitals. A characteristic feature of emergencies is a significant excess of victims over medical personnel providing treatment, and over the number of available monitoring equipment. Due to this, identification of acute patients who need emergency care and formation of patients queue for monitoring with medical devices is important task. Development of effective and low-cost monitoring systems that will reduce congestion of medical personnel during emergencies of great importance.

Substitute solutions can be systems capable of monitoring cardiovascular and respiratory parameters. Existing systems are devices that able to monitor only single patient. Accordingly, advantage of non-contact system based on computer vision is the ability to monitor multiple patients simultaneously using a single camera. This product is difficult to reproduce, because main features and know-how consist in mathematical methods of video analysis.
